not quite dog days…

but close. The kiddo starts school next week, one week after the local kids do. We are alone together for one more week. That has meant lots of time spent at her favorite places—the two pet shops in town. I know I’m spending too much time—-waaaaay too much time—at the pet shop when I admire the mice -eek!—and reptiles like geckos and bearded dragons. And….actually consider a ferret occupying our home. When I start admiring ball pythons, I’ll definitely need an intervention. But seriously, I can walk into Petco now, stop at the parakeet corral, and know who’s mating and which males are dueling over which hen. Nutty.

Stella laid an egg last week. One. Don’t get excited like I did though. She’s promptly forgotten all about it. Silly hen. It’s tiny. About a half an inch, tops. Milk white. Hard to believe a whole bird could emerge out of it.

Current mystery: why oh why does Finn ignore his water bowl and insist on sneaking long sips out of my cup—a goblet, no less?

pets want to eat and drink what their people are eating and drinking. also, odds are the beverage in your goblet is more freshly-poured than his water dish, and animals can be finicky about that, too.

and sharing food/water is a way of bonding amongst many types of critters. I know Fireball, my sainted cat that hated everyone who wasn’t me, often ate from my plates and drank from my cups. she also got really upset when I had a girlfriend, because apparently i was forbidden from being affectionate with any other living thing but her.

She has gone on to the halls of her ancestors, though, or perhaps been reincarnated by now, but some sadistic, scheming part of her will always be with me.

LOL Did I forget to mention his affinity for doing that? It just means he loves you =) Glad to hear all is going well–keep me posted on the hatchling.

Finn is definitely “my” cat. We are both at that stage in life when we just want to mellow out and chill. He’s very possessive of me. Nelly is the Kiddo’s watch-cat. She checks on her first thing in the morning and is never very far from her. Nelly KNOWS she’s a cat, and is content to do cat things like hunt, stalk, and eat regular food. Finn apparently thinks he’s a person. I had another cat like that who loved to eat off of my plate until I got her her very own. The water thing is just a little annoying and makes me paranoid when I step out of the room.
