for the kiddo

“…today is gone. today was fun. tomorrow is another one. every day, from here to there, funny things are everywhere.”

from Dr. Seuss’s One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish

The kiddo has composed a regimen for partings (which may include something as short as my leaving a room) and good night that rivals a secret handshake:

  1. Kiss
  2. Rub noses
  3. again.
  4. Big hug
  5. pets my head (!)
  6. handshake x 2

Afterwhich comes the solemn declaration: “friends forEVER”.

You have now been properly inducted into the hall of motherhood…now here’s a little secret-when they get to be teenagers, they again have all these “rules” and “formalities” about greeting them and saying goodbye. Generally it doesn’t involve affection of any kind and there’s a lot of mumbling toward you as they make way for their friends. Oooh, almost forgot, what works one day may blow up in your face the next as they DIE of embarassment and mutter “MOOOOOMMMMMMM, how could you” and then do the eye roll!
